In spite of the recent killing perpetrated by Islamist sect, Boko Haram, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, June 18, 2015 extended his hand of friendship to the terror group, referring to them as ‘brothers’.

President Buhari made the remarks as part of his message to Muslims in the country who join their counterparts around the world to mark the holy month of Ramadan.

In the message, which was signed by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, President Buhari urged Boko Haram insurgents to end their killings as they were tarnishing the image of the Islamic religion.

Since his inauguration on Friday, May 29, 2015, Boko Haram fighters have carried out over a dozen attacks, killing scores of citizens, none of which has been condemned or even addressed by President Buhari.

He urged Muslims to be “helpful to all manner of people, learning and following the true message of the religion as taught by the Holy Prophet.”

To the insurgents, President Buhari said:
“As we make collective efforts to bring to a permanent end the menace of the Boko Haram in the Lake Chad basin countries, let me use this auspicious occasion to appeal to our misguided brothers to drop their arms, embrace peace and seek a better understanding of Islam during this Holy period and beyond.
“I wish all our citizens a blessed Ramadan. Ramadan Kareem Mubarak.”

  2. But he has not shifted ground at this junction as Nigerians do report. He categorically called them 'mis-guided brothers, and not just brothers on the literal language.

  4. I think there is information vacuum created by our Government; this vacuum was inherited by the present government. This information vacuum has created mistrust among Nigerians of the different tribes; leading to all these arguments and wrong interpretations of government actions. The government MUST CARRY THE PEOPLE ALONG WITH ALL THEIR ACTIONS! The era of taken the people for granted is gone. It must be crystal clear to all that the same force used on the criminals in the North is the same force being expended on the criminals in the South (Niger Delta inclusive). Whoever breaks the Nigerian law should be ready to face the consequence of his or her action. No matter where you come from and no matter your reason or religion. The Nigerian Constitution is supreme over every other ‘person and religion’. If you are not ready to accept this, then, GO OUT OF NIGERIA. OUR GOVERNEMNT OUGHT IT AS A MATTER OF DUTY TO SHOW ALL NIGERIANS / ALL TRIBES / ALL PEOPLE) THAT IT IS NOT PARTIAL. THE GOVERNMENT MUST NOT, AND MUST NEVER BE SEEMED TO BE PARTIAL. I however still believe that those who are interested in THE TRUTH (NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH) will KNOW IT. This is the reason why BLACKMALES and PROPANGANDA could not stop Gen Buhari from winning the last election. If cheap propaganda and blackmails could not stop him then, then, neither can they stop him now; from doing what he believes is right for the nation. While encouraging the present government to open up more to the citizenry, I also want to encourage fellow Nigerians to be more objective in criticizing and interpreting government actions. The facts is very glaring, Gen Buhari has not spared the Boko Haram terrorists in the North; he has been killing them. The lesson you learn from the Boko Haram insurgence is that ‘’you nip the problem in the bud’’ before it goes out of hand. Dr Goodluck Jonathan failed to do this regarding Boko Haram, hence the menace they became, learning from the mistake of his predecessor, Gen Buhari does not want to make the same mistake with the Niger Delta Militants (though, I will prefer to call them 'criminals'). Hence his recent action to nip the problem in the bud before it goes out of hand (as the Boko Haram became). Criminals are criminals, whether in the South or in the North; murderers are murderers, whether in the North or in the South; and they have no place in the present day, ‘modern/civilized’ Nigeria. The constitution is 'supreme' above any religion or ethnic/tribal agitation. If you go against the Nigerian constitution, be you Northerner, Southerner, Christian, Muslim or a traditionalist, be ready to face the consequences of your actions. This is the only way forward for Nigeria; the only way we can be respected in the committee of nations, otherwise, we will have no nation, but a jungle, an animal kingdom and a hell upon the earth; GOD forbid!

  6. He has not said anything wrong by referring to the as his "misguided brothers." There are homes that have misguided brothers. That your brother is misguided does not sever the bond of brotherhood. All you do as a responsible brother that is properly guided is to persuade and appeal to him to consider his ways. If he causes more mayhem, you can then hand him over to the police for the law to take its course.

  7. DO YOU BECAUSE YOUR BROTHER IS A MISCREANT DISOWN YOUR BROTHERHOOD? NO, IT IS ENOUGH TO SCOLD, ADVISE HIM AGAINST HIS BAD ACTIONS AND BEHAVIOUS OR MISGUIDED BELIEVE AND IF HE DOES DESIST, TO HAVE THE LAW TAKE ITS CAUSE WHEN CAUGHT. THE BOKO HARAM INSURGENT IS A NATIONAL CALAMITY WHICH SHOULD BE CONDEMNED BY ALL, BUT DOES THAT REMOVE THEM FROM BEING CALLED NIGERIANS?
